Before having children, finding work was ‘easy’. I could name my terms and worked in challenging and fulfilling positions. Working full time and longer hours wasn’t an issue as I only had myself to worry about.
Unfortunately during maternity leave, my dream employer was taken over and things changed completely. My role was centralised and the thought of travelling with a new baby forced me to look for a new job. I worked for another company in the interim (who were amazing) however after a few years, I was yearning for a career job again. I accepted a full time role and decided to see how I would go. After almost 2 years I realised it was too much as my husband was also working in a demanding job. My children were quickly ageing & I wanted to be more active in their schooling. I approached my current employer after a glowing performance review and was saddened when the stance on reducing my hours was a very firm no.
This was the motivation I needed to pursue further studies & I recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Marketing. I updated my CV after reading tips on LinkedIn, blogs & forums. Over about 6 months, I applied for approximately 30 part time jobs; many I didn’t hear back from, and the four I attended interviews for didn’t feel right.
A friend told me about her “list”. She encouraged me to write 3 goals and to display my list somewhere prominent. I decided to stop applying for roles that didn’t fit my list. I had almost given up finding a role when a little ad was handed to me seeking a part time Marketing Officer. 3 days a week – tick, good pay level – tick, inclusive culture – tick.
Pick up a pen and and write your list.
Dream big – opportunities are out there. I truly believe it’s a lesson in persistence and timing.
