Internal Talent Acquisition functions have evolved significantly over the past decade and will continue to do so over the coming years to reflect the ever changing landscape of business needs. The pace of change, once described as turbotic, has certainly been supercharged and it can be daunting if you are a candidate considering a career move, a return from a career break of even new to the market.
So with that in mind, I wanted to share my top themes for you to be aware of:
1 – The Gig Economy
This term quite literally refers to “gigs” or “contract opportunities”. The Australian market is evolving as we recognise that the face of the workforce is changing. Individuals no longer necessarily want a “job for life” but rather are focused on learning opportunities and are willing to forego the historic job security in order to evolve, grow and develop. Don’t fear a contract opportunity, in a lot of cases as employees in permanent roles will move job every 2 years on average.
2 – Flexibility
Once whispered quietly rather than flaunted publicly. Flexibility means many different things to different people and employers are very open now to having a conversation about what it means to you as an individual – recognising that output should be the measure. Corporates have implemented “dress for day” policies to enable a less “suited” workforce and to enable the convergence of work/life furthermore so. Never be afraid to broach flexibility at the initial interview stages and really ensure the roles expectations are achievable.
3 – Digitisation
Social media plays a bigger role than ever in sourcing talent. Within the Australian market, Linkedin is the tool of choice to tap in to the “pactive” market. If you haven’t already, ensure you have your profile up to date. Ensure the information is correct, your photo is professional (and yes it’s ok to smile in it!) ensure you highlight where positions have been contract opportunities and don’t be worried about highlighting a career break – the market is evolving to appreciate the value these bring. Connect with people that you know or have met with at events and ensure you are presenting a professional air. Share articles and comment on topics of interest.
4 – Employer Branding
The convergence of recruitment and marketing is what we affectionately refer to as employer branding. Employer branding needs to be authentic and can really showcase work that they do, career pathways and values of the organisation. If there is a company that you are interested in working for, my guidance would be to set up a google news alert so you can read or watch each piece of news – look at the language, look at the content and think about how it resonates with you. This will also provide a really good opportunity to test this at the interview – if through branding you understand they have a flexible work force, use the interview as an opportunity to test that.
And finally…
Interviewing is daunting but remember, the more you prepare, the better placed you will be to succeed.
It is important to attend an interview looking smart, this doesn’t necessarily mean suited, it’s about what you are comfortable with, and again, if you look at the company job pages, you will get a feel for what is appropriate and if you aren’t sure, don’t be afraid to ask your recruiter. They can certainly offer guidance.
Switch the mobile off, shake hands firmly and maintain eye contact.
I always suggest reading the news a week prior to an interview to ensure you are across current affair as you will no doubt find an interesting article to perhaps weave into the interview – further demonstrating your commercial knowledge.
