Do these five things if you are looking for work as a result of COVID-19

Do these five things if you are looking for work as a result of COVID-19

Less than two months ago I found myself in a situation where I could either relocate interstate to stay in a position I love and with a company I passionately believe in; or find a new role in my home city.

As a co-parent to two energetic young boys and my eldest having recently started Prep, I opted for the latter. Having interviewed thousands of people transitioning across organisations, industries and pivoting their careers, one thing I was certain of was that the best positions are not necessarily advertised.

In an environment where many of our friends, family and neighbours are suddenly queuing up at Centrelink and the enormity of up to one million Australians anticipated to be left unemployed as a result of COVID-19 there were five key things I focussed on to secure a new opportunity.

1. Find a coach or mentor

If you don’t have the financial means to hire a coach 1:1, reach out to a mentor you admire, follow thought leaders you aspire to be like on social channels or immerse yourself in podcasts that challenge your thinking. Then find an accountability partner – someone you know and trust to support you through evaluating important decisions.

2. Get creative

This is an opportunity to recreate yourself! What transferrable skills do you have to offer another organisation? Or could you harness your entrepreneurial spirit and pivot your skills into setting up your own gig? Is there something you have always wanted to learn/offer/contribute/do to support others that this space now allows you to fulfill?

3. Get back to basics

Bring yourself certainty over how you can live more simply. Review your budget to cut back on non-essentials, cook wholesome food from your local community garden, research government incentives you are entitled to or cancel your gym membership and instead move your body to an inspiring free home workout.

4. Stay connected with your network

In a world where we are told to socially distance ourselves, now is not the time to completely disconnect. You need your network now more than ever to feel a sense of belonging and stay motivated in striving towards your goals. That could take the form of a friendly conversation over the fence with your neighbour who might be aware of a role in their husband’s company or as a complete distraction on HouseParty cracking jokes. You never know where your next opportunity could pop up.

5. Be mindful

Above all, guard your mind from what is not within your control. Find fun things to do at home that lift your spirits rather than trying to predict the impact COVID-19 will have on the human race in the future. Be present with your family and friends, though if they bring you down switch your time out with free mindfulness apps like Calm, Smiling Mind, Headspace and head to your local park for some fresh air.
